The Article That Changed Workplaces Forever.
Quick Review: This was a strong film that explored one of the darkest moments in Hollywood and journalism. Seeing every step to achieve this article is done very well. The dramatization of those moments and characters is well put together while not pushing away from reality. I'm surprised that this film is fast-paced and not slow. It's a well-paced film with a lot of serious moments that don't take much of the film while keeping the two main leads in the spotlight. The victim's stories are messed up but the way it was presented is well done while not making the scenes too explicit. I didn't know that they used an actual victim in the film as the final "on the record". It was Ashley Judd and I'm glad that one actress got to share her story on the big screen. That moment really pushed this film to be amazing and they handled the subject very seriously. The performances in this film are very great. I really loved Cary Mulligan's performance and it's nice to see Andre Braugher back on the big screen. He's very great in the film and the supporting cast were very strong. The cinematography is very good and the production design is amazing. I might be in the wrong but I think they used the actual New York Times Office. Anyways, the production of this film is great and I really liked the score which strengthens the drama. I will say this however, it felt like an Oscar-bait film which is bad and a good thing. This might slip into the Oscar race for best picture but who knows? The directing really made this film strong and having these real-life figures put into a Hollywood production but making it seem authentic and powerful. It felt like a documentary and it worked. This is a strong drama film with great performances and solid direction. This film will definitely become an underrated and overlooked film of 2022 and I hope it gets attention throughout the awards season. Now Playing in Theaters. It's All Part of The Menu.
Imagine if the characters in this film are all film critics including David Ehrlich, it would be fucking madness. But it's Gordon Ramsey torturing the fuck out of rich people, I love that. Beautiful torture and this film deliver the experience of how people are not grateful in today's society. I highly recommend going into this film as blind as possible because it's a wild ride from start to finish. If you love food, well, this is a film that will make you eat fast food for the rest of your life. As a film critic, this film broke me and you will read why this film broke the fuck out of me. Let's go to Hawthorne and eat some of Gordon Ramsey's dishes and potentially get yelled out. Story: A young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. That's all I can say because it's best to watch this film without knowing any important story details. I expected this film to be a thriller and horror but it's more of a psychological thriller. The film's presentation is honestly the strongest part of this film. The editing is so smooth and slick. It feels like a Netflix documentary at first but when the dark shit happens, it turns into a dark motion picture. I love how they mock the Chef's Table show with its editing and graphics. As a student filmmaker, it's pretty fucking hilarious how accurate it is and its social commentary, it makes this film more special. Besides the great editing, the cinematography is very slick and classy. I loved the color grading and it made this restaurant look as fancy yet dark. Not gonna lie, this is a restaurant I would actually visit. The production design is very great and the food design is out of this world. It looks fancy but delicious. But what makes the food design in this film so smart and funny is that these types of dishes are so random with little or no food. There's one dish that blew a person's mind if you know what I mean. There are many interesting directional decisions that make this film smart and engaging. I love how we got to have each character get their own moment with their flaws on screen. It's fucking hilarious and there are a lot of standouts in the film. Before we head to the meaty part, the score in this film is memorable and haunting. Overall, the production is amazing and I'm surprised this film cost over $30 million dollars. I bet it's because of the food itself. Now let's get into the meaty of this film which is the story/plot and characters which are all amazing and smartly written. I really loved the plot in this film which gets insane in the middle act but it's not that crazy. What's more crazy is that the film fucks with your expectations. I was expecting a kill count but there isn't a huge amount of it. But the way the film presents those moments really made my experience more fucked up. I love the dark and twisted environment it was presented in this Hawthorne restaurant and the villain in this film is darkly fantastic. He rivets every scene and makes the experience more fucked up with his twisted dishes. Ralph Fiennes did an amazing job with his performance and I love how they wrote his character. The final 20 minutes with his character is so done well that when the "moment" in the film arrives, it's well deserved and it pushes the theme of this film. I love how this film explores how artists will push their art to the extreme way in order to earn their respect and fame. This film explores the world of food and making food look like true art but in reality, people just want to eat good fucking food. It's like film where film is actually an art medium but the majority of people want to enjoy a good flick at the movie theaters or at home. Something to be enjoyed and move on. But people go to the extreme way to get that respect and this film delivers it very well. Critics are being trashed in this film and I love that. It's so fucking hilarious to see critics enjoy something fucked up and yet give fancy words to appreciate the art of the dish. Besides the art and critics, the other characters are rich people who enjoy fancy food and do not give a shit about low-income people. I love how they explored this social commentary on rich people and when the film was over, I knew I experienced another White Lotus and Triangle of Sadness film. Is this a trend now? Making fun of rich people? Let's keep that going. The main characters Margot and Tyler are great in this film. I really loved Anya Taylor-Joy's performance in this film and she really made this film more fun. Nicholas Hoult is very great in this film and I love his self-appreciating performance. He just wants to enjoy chef food and even though he sees the fucked up moments, he just shrugs it off which is hilarious. The supporting cast is also amazing and the standouts from the cast are Arturo Castro and John Leguizamo. Their performances are hilarious and I like how everyone is so lost while the critics are just enjoying the fucking madness. It's a wild shit show and the final dish is really fucking insane and creative. This was madness and I love that this film embraces the concept with its characters. While I really love this film, I have some nitpicks since I'm a film critic doing my job. Unless the chef fucking critiques me. I wish we got to see bloodier kills in this film and see more insane dishes. I felt like this film gave me space to put more food and it ran out. One major critique I found out was that the old couple that knew the main couple before dinner didn't have enough backstory. Rather, there was no expansive backstory or reason why they know them. That was my only legit flaw with those characters but besides that, it was a Hells Kitchen night! This is a brilliant dark film with amazing direction, slick editing, and fantastic performances. This was so fucking hilarious and it's one of the best films of the year. It's a film that will play with your expectations for better or worse. I had a good time with this film and I hope we can get more of these types of films because it's funny to see rich people get stoned and played by their rules. Now Playing in Theaters. Wakanda Forever!
Quick Review: After 4 years since Infinity War, we are back in Wakanda and this film brought many emotions, action, and grief. The execution of these elements of grief is done very well due to its direction and writing. This is by far one of the strongest written films from Marvel Studios and the directing is amazing. About 70% is Coogler's film and the rest is just MCU filler. But I'm glad that the film is almost centered around Wakanda and dealing with a new enemy from the ocean. It's very effective in its presentation and it's one of the best-looking Marvel films I've seen in a while. While the CGI is still iffy in some parts, the cinematography really makes up some of the crappy VFX in the background and with the color palette, it makes the film more beautiful and stand out. This film deserves the "Stand Out" recognition because it focuses on the character's grief, the expansion of Wakanda, and dealing with a new villain that has reasonable motivations with a great performance on top of that. This film dedicates to the characters and I love that. The MCU is missing and the serious moments are serious unlike Thor: Love and Thunder. This film deals with not just the loss of T'Challa but the real-life loss of Chadwick Boseman (Rest in Peace). It's an emotional film and while I didn't cry, I got chills and I felt tears in my heart. The ending hits, and I'm glad that this film went through a serious direction and tone. This is what Eternals should've been and I'm glad this was the final film in Phase 4. I have a serious issue with the multiverse saga but that's for another day. The cast is great including Angela Bassett and Tenoch Huerta. Namor is already one of the best villains in the MCU and I cannot wait to see him again. While I loved this film being different from the other marvel films, it still has the MCU stuff to build more of the universe. I liked Martin Freeman's scenes but I felt like they could've been written way better and shorter. Some scenes could've been shorter but I still appreciate the different direction that this film was going for. I really loved this film and it's the #2 best Phase 4 film, just behind Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now Playing in IMAX and Dolby Cinema. Your Invited To A Delightful Vacation. What Could Go Wrong?
Quick Review: After winning the Palme D'or at the Cannes Film Festival for the second time, Ruben Östlund brings another fantastic film about the world of riches. He explores how humanity can be dumb and not cooperate with each other through social class and race. Russians, Germans, Americans, and British people don't work together until someone keeps everyone quiet until they work together. It's a brilliant film with many hilarious jokes and scenes that will keep you engaged. It's a long film for sure but it's done well to bring these unnormal characters to life! The performances are very great including the two leads. Woody Harrelson is very funny as the captain of the private boat and I wish we got more of his character. The social commentary in this film is written very well. I love how they make fun of the rich people being so soft and having some of their own creations taken seriously. It's a chaotic film from beginning to end. It went from the wealthy rich world to just a deserted island with just fish and water. The film feels like two episodes into one because they introduce new characters in the third act. But those new characters feel like they were part of the entire film due to the cast's chemistry. The directing is very strong in this film and I can witness dedication and passion for this project. Production is very hard but it pays off well by bringing every little detail to life. The production design is fantastic and I loved the cinematography in this film. This is a big-scale film with an almost mid-budget size but they used every penny to make this film amazing. It can be slow at times with little edits in longer scenes but it's done with the right purpose. I really loved this film and the ending was pretty unexpected but it tells a lot within just the two final shots of the film. This is another win from Östlund and I cannot wait for his next film! Earth Got A New Hero, But He Isn't Exactly A Hero.
Quick Review: If you went into this film expecting dumb fun action, a cliché plot, and overall a good time, you will leave the film quite enjoyed. This feels like a modern 2000s superhero film filled with every check mark of every element in a superhero film. The characters are meh but they do their job. The JSA is fun in this film but I felt like they were like the Justice League but for temporary use. The kid however is low-key cringe. There could've been better direction but I didn't feel the energy of the kid. But I did feel the energy from Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam. I really liked his performance in this film and he goes full in non-stop killing. The violence is pretty strong in this film, especially for a superhero film but what really made this film just enjoyable are the action sequences and the rock himself. Plus the JSA and the post-credit scene. I was surprised by one scene in the film which worked but besides that, it's just another superhero film filled with action and forced humor. But not a Marvel-forced humor situation. This film feels like its own thing and I like it when they can do whatever they want in terms of production and character. It's mid at best but fun.
