Quick Review: I'm new to Richard Linklater films but I was interested because of the animation style and getting to know the director's work more since he's famous for the film Boyhood (2014). Plus, he has worked on two past films with the same style of animation. After watching this film, I got used to the animation style and it works here great for the story Linklater is trying to tell. It's a well-directed film with a simple and nostalgic story, filled with a great cast and homage to the 60s and NASA. It's a memory lane for much older adults who experienced the 60s and the moon-landing. While this film didn't hit me with nostalgia, I found interesting real-life facts during the film that I haven't heard. The NASA part was the strongest part for me while the 60s story felt underwhelming but I still cared about the childhood story. Plus, I like how the moon-landing sequence is all about the main character rather than the actual Apollo 11 team. The moon-landing sequence was the best part of the film and the NASA team behind it was great. Zachary Levi and Glen Powell work together very well and the comedy of this film worked well as well. Some misses but I had some chuckles. The score is well made and the cinematography was also well done. This film felt like a Saturday morning cartoon film and it hits that well. While some parts were underwhelming or weren't that interesting, the NASA storyline was an interesting part of the film and it works here for this type of animation film. This film was very interesting from beginning to end and it's a film that not many studios will produce today. It's just a simple heartful story from childhood and it will work for people who experienced the 60s or maybe 70s. I enjoyed this film as what it was as a childhood film and I cannot wait to watch Boyhood. Honestly, this film can be watched with the entire family. If you love space and the 60s, this film is right for you. This film was an interesting piece of animation and I hope filmmakers continue experimenting with many types of animation in the future. Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld. © 2010. Paramount Pictures, Skydance, Mike Zoss Productions and Scott Rudin Productions. Directed by Joel Cohen and Ethan Cohen. Watched it on Netflix.
Quick Review: Back at the Cohen house and watching this film was a joy. It's a Cohen film right from the start and it has that western charm that many neo-westerns haven't touched on in years. The story was very good as a simple revenge story but the true heart of the film is the crew. Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Hailee Steinfeld are all great together and they bring the classic western charm through their adventure. They work amazing together and with Josh Brolin's character in the film, it makes this film feel big and awesome. The story is very solid and while it takes time to get to know our protagonist, it sets up the old USA very well. Yes, there are some exposition scenes but it's necessary for this type of film. The story setup was good but the movie starts to get great during the adventure sequence and the final 20 minutes of the film. It's your typical western film but filled with great performances and great directing. The production design is very great, the cinematography is beautiful and the score is very good. The action was also fun and my expectations for this film were achieved. As a western film, it's very great and I had a good time watching it. I wish there was more action in this film because it's a western and the first 30 minutes were a little bit of a drag. But overall, I still had a good time watching this western. The runtime is short but you will have fun watching this film. I'm glad that films like The Harder They Fall (2021) still get produced today and the western genre feels like it's dying but there are more stories to tell in this world. I can't wait for the Cohen brother's next film if they get help from distributors. More westerns please Hollywood! Now Streaming on Netflix and on Digital. Vizeit Score: "B+" Copyright © 2022. Quick Review: Windfall is exactly the kind of film I want to see more of. Just 4 actors trapped in a messy situation that may cause death or stupidity about human nature. It's more of a dialogue thriller film set in one location with amazing performances and very good directing. The cinematography is great, the production design is pretty great and the score is very classy including the editing of this film. There isn't a lot of movement within character development and sometimes it's very slow on its pacing. But the performances keep this film on a high note. The stand-out is Jason Segel. This is one of the best performances in his career and everyone got a chance to shine through their performance including the guest character. This film pays homage to the classic thriller films of the 60s and 50s with a modern look and feel. The screenplay is pretty good but it slims down in some parts of the film where there's no character development or what to do next. It's like the characters feel lost or bored and there's nothing to do while being held captive by the character "Nobody" played by Jason Segel. Plus, the guest character should've got a little more screen time with some character development and have some scenes with a quicker pace but slow with these actors' amazing performances. This film promotes itself as a neo-noir film and while I felt that way, it felt like a neo-thriller film with the classic Hollywood feel. This could've been easily a Broadway production but as a film, it's very good. Some unexpected twists and turns that keeps the film going before becoming stale and boring. Great performances and it's well-directed. The writing, tone, and pacing are the main issues but the ending is a mixed bag for me. But overall, it's a solid film from start to finish. This going to be another hidden Netflix gem and they should continue producing films like this. It's interesting and entertaining. Now Streaming Only on Netflix. Vizeit Score: "B" Copyright © 2022.
