It's All Part of The Menu.
Imagine if the characters in this film are all film critics including David Ehrlich, it would be fucking madness. But it's Gordon Ramsey torturing the fuck out of rich people, I love that. Beautiful torture and this film deliver the experience of how people are not grateful in today's society. I highly recommend going into this film as blind as possible because it's a wild ride from start to finish. If you love food, well, this is a film that will make you eat fast food for the rest of your life. As a film critic, this film broke me and you will read why this film broke the fuck out of me. Let's go to Hawthorne and eat some of Gordon Ramsey's dishes and potentially get yelled out. Story: A young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. That's all I can say because it's best to watch this film without knowing any important story details. I expected this film to be a thriller and horror but it's more of a psychological thriller. The film's presentation is honestly the strongest part of this film. The editing is so smooth and slick. It feels like a Netflix documentary at first but when the dark shit happens, it turns into a dark motion picture. I love how they mock the Chef's Table show with its editing and graphics. As a student filmmaker, it's pretty fucking hilarious how accurate it is and its social commentary, it makes this film more special. Besides the great editing, the cinematography is very slick and classy. I loved the color grading and it made this restaurant look as fancy yet dark. Not gonna lie, this is a restaurant I would actually visit. The production design is very great and the food design is out of this world. It looks fancy but delicious. But what makes the food design in this film so smart and funny is that these types of dishes are so random with little or no food. There's one dish that blew a person's mind if you know what I mean. There are many interesting directional decisions that make this film smart and engaging. I love how we got to have each character get their own moment with their flaws on screen. It's fucking hilarious and there are a lot of standouts in the film. Before we head to the meaty part, the score in this film is memorable and haunting. Overall, the production is amazing and I'm surprised this film cost over $30 million dollars. I bet it's because of the food itself. Now let's get into the meaty of this film which is the story/plot and characters which are all amazing and smartly written. I really loved the plot in this film which gets insane in the middle act but it's not that crazy. What's more crazy is that the film fucks with your expectations. I was expecting a kill count but there isn't a huge amount of it. But the way the film presents those moments really made my experience more fucked up. I love the dark and twisted environment it was presented in this Hawthorne restaurant and the villain in this film is darkly fantastic. He rivets every scene and makes the experience more fucked up with his twisted dishes. Ralph Fiennes did an amazing job with his performance and I love how they wrote his character. The final 20 minutes with his character is so done well that when the "moment" in the film arrives, it's well deserved and it pushes the theme of this film. I love how this film explores how artists will push their art to the extreme way in order to earn their respect and fame. This film explores the world of food and making food look like true art but in reality, people just want to eat good fucking food. It's like film where film is actually an art medium but the majority of people want to enjoy a good flick at the movie theaters or at home. Something to be enjoyed and move on. But people go to the extreme way to get that respect and this film delivers it very well. Critics are being trashed in this film and I love that. It's so fucking hilarious to see critics enjoy something fucked up and yet give fancy words to appreciate the art of the dish. Besides the art and critics, the other characters are rich people who enjoy fancy food and do not give a shit about low-income people. I love how they explored this social commentary on rich people and when the film was over, I knew I experienced another White Lotus and Triangle of Sadness film. Is this a trend now? Making fun of rich people? Let's keep that going. The main characters Margot and Tyler are great in this film. I really loved Anya Taylor-Joy's performance in this film and she really made this film more fun. Nicholas Hoult is very great in this film and I love his self-appreciating performance. He just wants to enjoy chef food and even though he sees the fucked up moments, he just shrugs it off which is hilarious. The supporting cast is also amazing and the standouts from the cast are Arturo Castro and John Leguizamo. Their performances are hilarious and I like how everyone is so lost while the critics are just enjoying the fucking madness. It's a wild shit show and the final dish is really fucking insane and creative. This was madness and I love that this film embraces the concept with its characters. While I really love this film, I have some nitpicks since I'm a film critic doing my job. Unless the chef fucking critiques me. I wish we got to see bloodier kills in this film and see more insane dishes. I felt like this film gave me space to put more food and it ran out. One major critique I found out was that the old couple that knew the main couple before dinner didn't have enough backstory. Rather, there was no expansive backstory or reason why they know them. That was my only legit flaw with those characters but besides that, it was a Hells Kitchen night! This is a brilliant dark film with amazing direction, slick editing, and fantastic performances. This was so fucking hilarious and it's one of the best films of the year. It's a film that will play with your expectations for better or worse. I had a good time with this film and I hope we can get more of these types of films because it's funny to see rich people get stoned and played by their rules. Now Playing in Theaters.
