Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons. © 2014. Sony Pictures Classic, Stage 6 Films, Blumhouse, Bold Films, and Right of Way Films. Directed by Damien Chazelle. Watched it on Netflix in Mexico
If you want to study music, this film is perfect for you but you might wanna take a step back as well. This film goes 100 intensity level the moment J.K. Simmons is on screen and the presentation of this film is just spectacular. Once a small Sundance film that turned into one of the best films of the 2010s. This film delivers on every technical level and Damien Chazelle proves that he gives a shit about the craftsmanship of filmmaking. In this review, you will read why this film is still loved in the film community and a film that should be studied in future film classes because why not. It's fantastic. Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is an ambitious young jazz drummer, in pursuit of rising to the top of his elite music conservatory. Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), an instructor known for his terrifying teaching methods, discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into the top jazz ensemble, forever changing the young man's life. But Andrew's passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into obsession, as his ruthless teacher pushes him to the brink of his ability and his sanity. Right away, we start the film with beautiful editing and sound design. The opening scene just sets up what movie you are about to watch. I already love both of the characters on screen and it's about to get messy throughout the film. The characters in the film are well written but the performances are the meat of this film. J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller are fantastic and Simmons deserved that Oscar. He crushed his character and pushed the other actors to their limits. He's terrifying on-screen and his insults are fucking creative. He just destroys you in one sentence without hesitation. Legit, he is one of the best antagonists of all time. Miles Teller also should've got an Oscar nomination for his performance. He did an excellent job of bringing this soft character into a dickhead and misunderstood character in the end. Something about this character really relates to me due to relationships and pushing yourself to your limits on becoming the next big thing. The writing in this film is just fantastic and brings many questions to the table. But also bring answers and it wants you to rethink life because this film absolutely broke me because of its message. It's a strong message but it helps me rethink about everything going forward. Beautiful writing. The technical side of filmmaking was fucking fantastic. I loved every second of this film. The editing is the stand-out of this film. It goes beat by beat into the rhythm of the scene and the score. The editing reminds me of The Social Network and West Side Story (2021) but mashed together and made it more dramatic. It's clever editing with music and without music. The editing goes full ballistic in the final scene and sometimes, the editing fucks up your mind and your emotions as well. The editing is that good. The cinematography is beautiful with many creative angles and close-up shots. The drip of blood, sweat, and tears are presented in a beautiful way through the drums. This film utilizes a lot of close-up shots to bring in a lot of emotions through the actors and the camera really takes its time to get into the character's mind. It's brilliant. Plus, the editing makes it tenser and makes you feel nervous throughout the film. It reminds me of Uncut Gems which is another fantastic film that uses cinematography and editing in a tense and beautiful way. The music and the score of this film are flawless. It's very memorable and there is a lot of distinct sounds that stand out throughout the film. The drums feel tense, the sticks hit, and the rage is present in the film. The Whiplash score is fantastic and it is still stuck inside my mind. It's too good. I cannot forget about the directing. Damien Chazelle proves that he is a fantastic director from La La Land to First Man. His direction is strong in this film and he knows how to make a scene impactful with a little and huge impact on the story. Even one small scene can affect the entire film. His style was born in this film and with the Chazelle iconic fast pan style, in the end, it's a mark of his excellence in film. Chazelle was born to direct and his directing will be upgraded with every film he makes. I love this film a lot and it's a film that film classes should study. Even music classes as well. The style of Chazelle's directing and the score of this film is flawless and the performances make this film come to life. The performances are the standouts of the film including the editing. I loved every second of this film and it's a film that will be looked at for many years to come. Another masterpiece in my books. Now Streaming on Showtime in the USA and on Netflix internationally.
