Review: “The Matrix Resurrections” is the “Last Jedi” of the franchise. I thought I would hate it but unexpectedly, it’s enjoyable. But it still has core issues within the narrative and unfortunately, the filmmaking as well. Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss are great in the film and felt like it’s the same old Neo and Trinity. Their chemistry is still strong in the film and now, Neo must save Trinity from the matrix. It’s a love story instead of a matrix story. The rest of the cast are great as well and none of them suck. They had their purposes in the film. I don’t see any “Woke” material in the film. The cast is pretty great. The story is pretty decent. While it’s a love story, it’s still a matrix story with the old matrix lore and world. It will be confusing at first but once the film explains it, it will be just another matrix story. There’s some nostalgia in the film and they brought back certain scenes from old films or recreated it with new visuals. The villain without giving spoilers is pretty good. It expands the psychology and philosophy of the original trilogy and brings it into the new matrix. While some of it didn’t land, it still brought its message of the brand new matrix. The visuals are pretty good with great CGI. The cinematography is good and while some of the green color grading isn’t present, it still has the iconic matrix visuals. The score is good and the production design is good as well. The action sequences were entertaining, especially the finale. But unfortunately, not everything lands. The message that it’s going for isn’t clear at first sitting. That’s why when I watch YouTube videos explaining about the film, I get that much easier then the film itself. There’s so much exposition dump in the film. It’s pretty funny that Neo is a video game developer and he’s still alive. Like HOW?!? There’s little explanation of why there’s a different Morpheus but it looks like the OG one played by Laurence Fishburne is…can’t say it. Agent Smith is a brand new smith but there’s no clear explanation. There’s less screen time of Trinity unfortunately and there’s a lot of explanation but no clear reason of why this or that. The editing in the action sequences are BAD. It’s cookie cutter unfortunately and there’s no true innovation within the sequences. I was very disappointed in some of the action sequences and Keanu Reeves didn’t show his true potential as Neo again. Neo doesn’t talk a lot in the film which I’m okay but he’s the main character. So much potential, yet some of it didn’t land. While The Matrix Resurrections missed a few steps into making a amazing sequel, it’s still a good sequel. It’s just the writing was underdeveloped and the editing was cookie cutter. But it’s still a matrix film. Now Playing in Theaters and on HBO Max till January 22, 2022.
