Bradley Cooper. © 2021. Searchlight Pictures/Walt Disney Motion Pictures. Directed by Guillermo del Toro. Review: Guillermo Del Toro is back with his new film “Nightmare Alley” and it’s very interesting. I thought it would be a horror film or some weird carnival shit but wow, I did not expect to turn the wheels around. It’s a Psychological thriller, not a horror film.
Bradley Cooper is very great in this film. He doesn’t talk too much in the first act but he starts to get used to the carnival business. After that, we finally get to see his character shine. I loved how his character gets so fucked in many situations and he overcomes it until his final act. Rooney Mara is very great also. I liked her chemistry with Cooper’s character and she’s like the light of the dark situation. Cate Blanchett was freaking good and she haunts Cooper’s character with just therapy. The rest of the cast were also great and brought the story to life. I was surprised that Ron Perlman was in the film. The story was pretty good too. It’s divided into two acts, one at the carnival and one with Cooper’s character doing magic as a profession. It’s like this film was two films into one. I liked how Toro changed up the story structure to get to know who Cooper’s character really is. I like something different and it worked out. Its a remake from a original film but it feels very original. The story was well executed and the ending was very twisted. The ending was something. It revolves around a background character and it connects back to the main character. When you see the film, you will see which character I'm talking about. It’s haunting and sad. I like how the film is very psychological and not a horror film. It promotes itself a horror film, but it’s a thriller film and It’s still a horror film within the final act. The production design is fantastic and there’s actually money put behind it all. All practical. Love it. The cinematography was very good as well. The direction was very great as usual because it’s Toro. He loves thriller/weird films and this one fits into his catalog. Technical wise, it’s fantastic. I enjoyed this film a lot and while it’s not his best film, I was still invested. Unfortunately, the film has some problems. The runtime was very long. Some scenes dragged and there was some plot holes that were created along the way. While I liked how the film was divided into two parts, some of the elements were left unchecked or didn’t touch on back. The carnival elements and the weird dolls and magic shit were kind of useless but only to set up the environment of the film. Willem Dafoe’s character was cool and interesting, but his things around his carnival were never mentioned back again. The weird elements were just a spook and I thought it would be a Pan’s Labyrinth film but this one is more of a “The shape of water” film. The marketing was kind of misleading in a good way. But for some audiences, it wouldn’t work at all. Some of the deaths in the film were predictable and I wish there was more of that horror element. But in the end, I enjoyed it. Another great film from Guillermo del Toro and while it may not be for everyone, it’s still a solid film to watch to pass time. A weird film yet good. Now playing in theaters.
