Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman. © 2021. MGM and Bron Studios. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Review: Man oh man. What a FILM!!! Now this is a film I’ve been waiting for and it lands perfectly. I loved every second of it and Paul Thomas Anderson just delivers another great film.
Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman were wonderful in the film. Their performances felt very natural and real. The chemistry felt real and while the age gap was kinda weird, I knew they would like each other in the first place. Haim was very funny in the film and had that bitchy personality yet caring for his best friend and soon lover. I like how her character just goes with different guys or guys that try to flirt with her like Bradley Cooper’s character. It’s funny and weird at the same time. Haim always supports Hoffmann’s character in every situation and she’s there for him. That’s a person who you trust in your entire life. Cooper’s character was very relatable. He tries to flirt with her, try to go with her on a date, start many businesses and other opportunities and does some dumbass shit. His character was very realistic. Cooper’s acting was very good and delivers a relatable character that not many modern high school films do anymore. This is Cooper and Haim first film and they knocked it out of the park. The supporting cast were amazing as well. The child actors weren’t annoying af and they felt very real to the script and the world. Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper, and Benny Safdie were also amazing as well. They bring the charisma to the next level with their performances and made the fun more emotional and fun at the same time. This film ain’t so much of a dramatic film, rather a fun dramatic film. Everyone in the film were amazing! The story, well it’s a love story. But what’s so amazing about this story is that Haim’s character goes with different men just to make fun of Hoffman’s character or to find different men who like Haim. But the plan doesn’t work out. She always lands onto Hoffman’s character and their relationship re heals again. It’s a simple story but there’s some twists and interesting turns throughout the film. The film is very well paced and it doesn’t drag which is surprising. This a 2 hour and 15 minute film and the film felt long but the film was so well paced, I didn’t complain about the runtime. All scenes were well paced and give each actors great performances at a well spaced time. I was so engaged just by the performances alone and the cinematography itself as well. I also liked how this film was also focused around the politics and the gas shortage around the 70s. That was perfect. The humor was very well done and it was mixed with dark humor and dry humor. The swearing was well placed and the comedic moments were very memorable. A well made Simple story. The cinematography is amazing. Shot with 35mm film and everything in the film was practical which is amazing. Expect the background which some of it is VFX. It’s very well shot and there’s a lot of very interesting and beautiful shots in the film. The editing is just amazing in the film. It lets the film just stay with the flow and follow the performances and the scenery alone. The phone silence scene was just brilliant with the editing. The production design is very real and amazing. Technical wise, its fucking great. Paul Thomas Anderson directing was brilliant and perfect. He just does it again. He never misses. This is a film that everyone should see. Even if your not a film fan, this is still a fun film to just kick back and have fun with your friends. Please Criterion, release it on your collection! Can’t wait to get it on blu-ray. Vizeit Score: “A+” Copyright © 2021. Vizeit Studios. All Rights Reserved. Review Written By: Everardo Garcia Jr.
