Quick Review: A slow dramatic return from Jennifer Lawrence and this film was surprisingly very strong. It's a slow dramatic story about a soldier returning home after a war explosion that damaged her brain. During her home back, she reconnects with her mother but also trying to re-live a new life with a brand new friend who can comfort her. It's a small film but it has a lot of heart to it. If you take away the characters and story of the film, you get a sense of realism within the city of New Orleans, and add back the character and story, it feels real at the moment. It's a strong well written story filled with great performances, especially from Brian Tyree Henry. He really brings a down-to-earth performance that is slow yet real and relaxing. It gets more heartbreaking when you learn about each character's struggles and what they have to offer at home or elsewhere. The bonding of friendship is the key to this film and it takes it to a realism level that I haven't seen in a while. Having friends really helps you mentally and make you feel comfortable. Even though the mother plays a part in this film, a friend can change someone's personality and make them feel comfortable and be themselves without anything holding them back. The friendship theme really works here and I relate to it a lot in this film. It feels like some sort of documentary yet keeping the narrative at its core. The cinematography is honestly very great. A lot of still shots help the dramatic tone of the film and keep its realism. It's a thoughtful film filled with excellent performances and it's well-paced from beginning to end. It didn't feel draggy and while it was slow, I didn't feel any scenes didn't need to be cut or shortened. It felt just right and that's a major plus. I feel like this was a natural film meaning that it felt real and the relationship felt lived in. I'm glad that I caught this film and it's one of the strongest films of 2022. Another win for Apple and A24. What a great calming film. Now Streaming Only on Apple TV+. Vizeit Score: "A-" (Share this review with your film friends and on social media!
